Book Title : Framed
Author : Christopher R. Martin
Publisher : Cornell University Press
Release Date : 2004
Pages : 248
ISBN : 0801488877
Available Language : English, Spanish, And French

Framed Summary : Christopher R. Martin argues that the mainstream news media (and the large corporations behind them) put the labor movement in a bad light even while avoiding the appearance of bias. Martin has found that the news media construct "common ground" narratives between labor and management positions by reporting on labor relations from a consumer perspective. Martin identifies five central storytelling frames using this consumer orientation that repeatedly emerged in the news media coverage of major labor stories in the 1990s: the 1991-94 shutdown of the General Motors Willow Run Assembly Plant in Ypsilanti, Michigan; the 1993 American Airlines flight attendant strike; the 1994-95 Major League Baseball strike, the 1997 United Parcel Service strike, and the 1999 protests against the World Trade Organization's conference in Seattle. In Martin's view, the news media's consumer "take" on the labor movement has the effect of submerging issues of citizenship, political activity, and class relations, and elevating issues of consumption and the myth of a class-free America. Instead of facilitating a public sphere, the democratic ideal in which the public can engage in discovery and rational-critical debate, Martin says, news organizations have fostered a consumer sphere, in which public discourse and action is defined in terms of consumer interests--the impact of strikes, lock-outs, shut-downs, and protests on the general consumer economy and the price, quality, and availability of things such as automobiles, airline flights, and baseball tickets.

Framed Summary : The perfect crime – it's a work of art, in Frank Cottrell Boyce's ingenious story, Framed. Dylan is the only boy living in the tiny Welsh town of Manod. His parents run the Snowdonia Oasis Auto Marvel garage – and when he's not trying to persuade his sisters to play football, Dylan is in charge of the petrol log. And that means he gets to keep track of everyone coming in and out of Manod – what car they drive, what they're called, even their favourite flavour of crisps. But when a mysterious convoy of lorries trundles up the misty mountainside towards an old, disused mine, even Dylan is confounded. Who are these people – and what have they got to hide? A story inspired by a press cutting describing how, during World War II, the treasured contents of London's National Gallery were stored in Welsh slate mines. Once a month, a morale-boosting masterpiece would be unveiled in the village and then returned to London for viewing. This is a funny and touching exploration of how art – its beauty and its value – touches the life of one little boy and his big family in a very small town. This edition of Framed includes bonus material and discussion questions from Frank Cottrell Boyce, and illustrations by Steven Lenton.

Framed Summary : Framed is a wake-up call for those who think that race does not matter in Canada. The first book on the media’s coverage of race in Canadian politics, it provides an empirical analysis of print media combined with in-depth interviews of elected officials, former candidates, political staffers, and journalists. While there may be few examples of overt racism in newspapers, Erin Tolley reveals how racial assumptions and narratives frame news stories and the experiences of those who enter political life. Connecting the dots, she argues that current reporting trends are weakening Canada’s commitment to a robust, inclusive democracy.

His gift of the gab took him from a start-up gallery in New York's Soho into the houses, lives and wallets of stars including Jack Nicholson, Barbra Streisand, Sylvester Stallone, Bruce Willis, Andy Warhol and Madonna. bra Appearing to live the American Dream, his high-maintenance, wheeler-dealer lifestyle became a dark path to self-destruction. At the height of his success, Volpe crashed and burned in a widely publi-cised case of art fraud. Represented by top attorneys Nathan and Alan Dershowitz (of Klaus Von Bulow trial fame), his story made international headlines and threatened to blow the lid off the secret world of art dealing. With behind-the-scenes coverage, the book gives an insight into how auctions and dealers manoeuvre art around the globe. Money laundering, trading art with drug dealers, avoiding tax, and making false insurance claims are only a taste of what is revealed as the seedier side of the art world is laid bare. Framed is a fascinatingblow-by-blow account of how the life of one man who 'had it all' spiralled out of control. Volpe learned the hard way that when you lose sight of who you really are nothing in the world.
